No matter if you’ve recently moved in or have lived there for many years, the feeling of your house actually being a home can come and go, but you needn’t worry as we’re about to make your task much easier.

DIY Tips

Keeping your home exactly how you want it to look can be more of a challenge that people may initially think. But if you want to make living in your home as enjoyable as possible, then this is something that you definitely need to think about.

You can make a big difference to your some with some very subtle changes, it’s all about knowing what’s best for your home and what you want as an outcome doing some DIY. With that said, here are a few thoughts that we think are quick wins for your home.

Painting

One of the first things people will notice when entering your home is the walls. Be it in the passage when they take of their shoes or when they’re sat in your living room while you make a cup of tea, the eye wanders. Not only is a fresh lick of paint great for taking away any rubs or marks on the wall, they actually finish off a room so well too.

Whether you choose a new colour during redecorating or simply retouch it with the current one, you will notice a difference when painting the rooms in your home. Painting and decorating a room can make a huge difference to the entire appearance, and it can even inject new life into rooms that could be starting to age.

So, decide on the colour scheme of each room and stick to it. It’s not advisable to rush into this decision, otherwise you could end up having to repaint your whole house all over again. Think about the type of finish you would like to achieve or the kind of mood you’re going for. From here, take some time out to research your thoughts and ideas to find a look to aim for. This will allow you to make you visions much more achievable.

Gardening

Like many of us, the garden is one of the most important parts of the home. People who admire their outside space often keep their garden look its best all year round. If you would rather enjoy the sunshine than be out working in it, we have some ideas on how to get there much quicker.

Depending on the size of your outside space, you might want to consider either artificial grass or decking. This will bring maintenance down by a tenfold. You can still incorporate colours and natural into your garden by simply adding plant pots or flower beds. They will only ever need watering or very low maintenance, but they will add lots of colour to your garden.

If you want to have a quick tidy up of your garden but don’t know where to start, a few things we suggest doing are: mowing the lawn, trimming bushes back, sweeping up, tidy away any dirt, leaves or unwanted items, and have a clear out of garden toys and furniture. If the family have outgrown something or no longer use it, sell it or donate it! This will give you some spare funds to invest in the garden and other areas of your home, or if you choose to donate you will feel really good knowing that you’ve helped someone else out.

Work on one Room at a Time

One of the biggest failings of redecorating is trying to tackle everywhere at once. You will end up having ideas all over the place, which will effect the DIY and also spreading out colours to styles in every room (not cool). Focus on one room at time, you may find it best to start in the kitchen, move to the living room then work your way through the ground floor then upstairs afterwards. This is because guests are more likely to see your downstairs first, so it makes sense to finish this first.

Kitchens are a great place to start as they may only need a deep clean or some TLC in the cupboards and flooring. Next, the living room. This will need a style before you begin, so opt for something relaxing and modern. Think about the furniture already in the room before you begin the redecorating because if you’re keeping the sofa for example, it needs to go with the finished look.

Upstairs now, the bathroom; if yours is a little outdated a simple refurb will make it look ten times better, which will mean your baths will become much more relaxing and enjoyable too. Each bedroom will be in your hands, so just ensure that the design or style you like is fit for purpose, don’t push for a showroom look if you can’t maintain it as you may be left disappointed in a few weeks if it doesn’t look untouched each day.

Finally – Be Realistic

The key to redecorating your home may not be what you actually do as part of your DIY, instead, it is how realistic you are about the outcome. If you envision something totally unachievable or out your budget, you’ll be left disappointed when your home doesn’t reflect your ideas. So, our main advice is to be true to yourself, your home, and your home comforts.

Don’t be afraid to try new styles and colours but be realistic in knowing that your home will look fantastic but to a level in which you’re comfortable with. Your house is your home at the end of the day, so you need to ensure that your redecorating and design matches your tastes and style, but most importantly your budget!
