5 Must Haves For Those With Sensitive Skin

Your skin is the largest organ on your body and your defence against the myriad contaminants and toxins of the modern world. In an age of chemicals, however, where so many of the things we come into contact with on a daily basis are of synthetic origin, it can give just about anyone the hives.

For those with particularly sensitive skin like me, however, getting through the daily rigours of modern life can become an itchy and irritated nightmare. The plethora of cheap and unnatural products on the market can only exacerbate our existing skin issues and eroding our quality of living.

The good news is that you don’t even have to break the bank to fill your home with things that will soothe and nurture your skin. If your skin is prone to irritation, and inflammation your home should eschew potentially harmful chemicals and opt instead for:

Deodorant bars

Many commercially available deodorant sprays are either alcohol-based perfumes that mask the scent of body odour or antiperspirants which clog the pores.

Both of which are anathema to sensitive skin. Deodorant bars like this one from Lush, however, are much kinder to the skin, eliminating the bacteria which can cause body odour without clogging your pores or harming your skin.

They’re also way better for the environment, too. They’re fully biodegradable, made from only natural ingredients and don’t come packaged in plastic.

Essential oils

Avoid room sprays and plug-in air fresheners. These are full of potentially harmful chemicals which won’t do your skin or your health any favours. The documentary Stink does a great job of showing audiences the harmful chemicals that can lurk behind the seemingly innocuous term “scent”.

Instead, freshen up your home with essential oil diffusers. They’re an effective and natural way to keep your home smelling fresh without irritating your skin.

Bath salts

Climbing into a relaxing bubble bath after a hard day’s work is an understandably appealing prospect. Yet, commercial bubble baths can contain all kinds of nasty ingredients which can play merry Hell with sensitive skin.

Eschew these for soothing bath salts which can help to relax tired muscles while also flushing toxins out of the skin without causing irritation.

100% cotton towels

Skin irritation often occurs when pores get clogged with sweat. As a result, you should avoid towels which are made of or containing synthetic fibres as these can be repellent to moisture and don’t let the skin breathe.

100% cotton towels like these wholesale bath towels from Richard Haworth, on the other hand, are super absorbent and help to keep your skin free of irritants. They’re also fluffier and softer to the touch, making for a much more pleasurable experience when drying off.

Shea butter

Keeping your skin well hydrated is an essential part of any good skincare regimen. However, it’s astonishing how many moisturisers on the market contain compounds which can be irritating to skin (once again hiding under the umbrella term “scent”).

You can save money and enjoy blissfully hydrated skin by using natural alternatives like shea butter or cocoa butter.

When you know what to buy and what to avoid, even the most easily inflamed skin can be easy to live with!
