Eager to go on a cruise holiday, but not sure your budget will stretch to it? Fortunately, there are many ways to cut the costs of cruises that can make it an affordable holiday option for anyone. Here are just a few tips for saving money when at sea.
Go all inclusive
All inclusive deals are a great way to save money. These often include free drinks and free food, reducing the amount of spending money required whilst on your cruise. You should, of course, be careful as the definition of all-inclusive can vary – whilst Fred Olsen offer some great deals, there may only be certain drinks included.
Book early
By booking a year in advance, you may be able to take advantage of Early Bird Deals. Not only are you guaranteed massive discounts by booking early, but you can also spread out the cost in instalments over a period of months so that isn’t such a big blow on your finances. You’re also more likely to be rewarded with a free upgrade by booking early.
Book last minute
Cruise ships will also try to fill up empty cabins last minute by offering deals a week or two before departure. If you’re able to get up and go at a moment’s notice, you may be able to take advantage of these deals. Some of these last minute discounts can be as much as 50%!
Join cruise clubs for discounts
Certain cruise clubs such as the Bolsover Cruise Club offer exclusive deals to those that sign up. This could help you to make huge savings if you go on regular cruises. Signing up to such clubs may involve membership fees, whilst other clubs may be free. Once signed up, you can get alerts on all the latest deal via email.
Watch out for hidden costs
Cruises can sometimes come with other hidden costs. Many ships charge for wi-fi with a daily or hourly fee which can add up over two weeks. If you’re able to survive without internet, you could be better off (you can take advantage of free wi-fi once you reach a port). Calls and texts may also come with extra fees when at sea, although some mobile providers may offer perks that make this less expensive. A final hidden cost to look out for is gratuities.
Even if drinks and food are included, tips may be expected (especially on US owned cruise ships) which will start to add up over the course of your holiday. These may be added automatically onto receipts – whilst you can choose not to pay them, it may be frowned upon on. Some cruises allow you to pay a gratuity charge upfront to save you from having to pay these fees, which could save you money.
