Sofa, So Good: Choosing The Right Sofa

August 25, 2022 in Lifestyle - Micaela

Need help choosing a sofa for your living room? Nowadays sofas come in all shapes and sizes. Here are a few tips for helping you to find the best option for your home.

Classic or modern?

You want a sofa that matches the style of your home. Classic style sofas such as these examples from the Chesterfield Sofa Company are great for complementing older homes. That said, they my also serve as a great statement piece in a modern apartment.

Modern sofa designs are better suited for modern homes and may look out of place in an older home surrounded by period pieces and antiques.

How big?

It’s important to measure the dimensions of your living room so that you know what size to look for – you don’t want to end up with a sofa that’s too big to fit in your home.

Sectional sofas can be great for fitting into corners and can be ideal if you have a big family or plan on having guests round regularly. Companies like Interior Define sell custom sectional sofas which can be designed to the dimensions of your room.

Flat-pack or pre-assembled?

If you live in an upper floor apartment or have lots of narrow doorways and corridors leading to your living room, you could find that a pre-assembled sofa is impossible to get into your home.

In such situations, it’s worth opting for a flat-pack sofa or a sofa that can be dissembled. The likes of Nabru specialise in flat-pack sofas. Flat-pack sofas are likely to be cheaper to deliver (if you’re picking up the sofa yourself, a flat-pack could also save you having to hire a van).

Do you have pets or animals?

For those with pets or animals, you may want to consider the material of your sofa. When it comes to easily cleaning spillages or hoovering up dog hair, leather is the best option (you’re best opting for darker leather in the case of spillages, as light leather may still stain).

When it comes to protecting your sofa from damage such as scratching from cats, synthetic microfibre sofas meanwhile are often the best option. Bear in mind that you may simply be able to use a slipcover.

Does it need to double up as a bed/storage?

If you regularly have guests staying and don’t have a spare bedroom, a sofabed could be handy. You can use sites like Sofabed to search for these types of sofas.

There are also sofas out there that have in-built storage, which could be useful for cutting down on clutter in your home.

What’s your budget?

On top of practicality, it’s also important to consider your budget. You may find that a new sofa is too expensive if you’ve only got a small budget to work with.

Second-hand sofas are often a lot cheaper than brand new ones – you can even get lucky and find people giving away sofas for free on social media. Of course, you should always inspect these items carefully before buying to ensure that they’re in good condition.

Another option could be to buy a new sofa on finance. You will end up paying more in the long run as there will be interest added, but by spreading out the cost it could be more affordable upfront.
