Nyonya Recipe Shop Malaysian Snacks

Although I have tried to eliminate sugar from my diet I do allow myself the odd treat from time to time, so when I was offered the chance to try out some Malaysian snacks from the Nyonya Recipe Shop I was super excited – even more so when I discovered the lady behind the company, Loretta, could make her treats vegan!

Originally from Malaysia, Loretta has been living in the UK for more than 10 years and is a passionate cook and food blogger sharing her love of Malaysian food with the world. Her online shop stocks typical Malaysian, family favourites and are vegetarian-friendly with Loretta being able to personalise most to plant-based/ vegan.

Loretta is also passionate about the environment and is currently transitioning to 100% compostable packaging which gets a big thumbs up from me as I am trying to cut down the amount of single use plastics that come into my home.

I was lucky enough to have received a selection of her vegan-friendly products: Dragon Balls, Peanut Cookies, Cranberry Cookies and Chocolate Chip Cookies.

All of the cookies are good for 6-8 weeks, once opened place in an air-tight container and consume within a week. The Dragon Balls remain fresh for 7-10 days and must be stored in the fridge.

Dragon Balls

These were totally new to me! Dragon Balls are round shaped buns made from Chinese pastry filled with sweet and salty mung beans paste which might sound odd but is actually delicious. Traditionally these are eaten as a snack alongside tea with friends. You can eat the Balls either at room temperature or after baking for 12 to 15 minutes at 180°C or until warmed through. This process makes the pastry even more flaky and delicious.

Peanut Cookies

I can’t get enough of peanut butter. Before I was vegan I used to LOVE Reese’s Pieces so these peanut cookies were the perfect treat for me. Made to a simple, traditional Malaysian recipe made with peanuts these cookies are very crumbly and satisfyingly, perfect with a cup of tea. I really loved the star detail on the tops of the cookies which gives them a bit of elegance. Of course, being a peanut addict they didn’t last long!

Cranberry Cookies

These were my mum’s favourites as she loves cranberries. They are crunchy cookie filled with lots of dried cranberries which offer a pop of sweet and tangy flavour along with a satisfying chewiness to these buttery (although butter-free!) biscuits. Again, these cookies make the perfect accompaniment to tea or coffee and would make a lovely gift for friends or family.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

The chocolate chip cookies are a delicious and moreish snack to share (or not! haha). They are light and crunchy in texture and have a generous amount of dark chocolate chips. Again, they were surprisingly buttery for a vegan-friendly biscuit which was really nice. I even took them along to my quilting class and my non-vegan friends were amazed at how good they tasted.

Overall I have really enjoyed trying Loretta’s vegan-friendly versions of her delicious traditional Malaysian treats. I love them so much I have put in an order for more!

I award the Nyonya Recipe Shop Malaysian Snacks 5 out of 5 stars and can’t wait to get my hands on more.

I’m so intrigued by the Dragon Balls – not to mention those chocolate chip cookies!

Now these sound like some really interesting products, I do love trying anything from small companies and I love that they hand made things. I want to try the Dragon Balls most of all if only for the name haha!

Hi Micaela, I am glad you like the Malaysian cookies and the dragon balls. I know it is a strange taste, the dragon balls, and I am so happy that people here like them. Of course not all people like them. that is normal. Btw, there is not peanut butter in the peanut cookies, but it tastes like there is peanut butter. I will be freshly baking your order later this morning and should post by today.

    Many thanks, Loretta

What a wonderful idea to produce these delicious looking treats. Who doesn’t love cookies, and the dragon balls actually sound really tempting.

I would love the peanut cookies, as i adore anything with peanuts in. I’ve tried something like the dragon balls before and they aren’t for me but the other products look delicious
