If you’ve got a small bedroom and you’ve trimmed your ‘stuff’ down as much as possible, you may need to consider making over your storage so you can fit things in your room more comfortable. Here are some great ways to fit more storage into your bedroom without making it feel cramped.
What belongs in your bedroom?
While it makes sense to keep your clothes in your wardrobe, sometimes, if your wardrobe space is cramped, consider all of the seasonal clothes which you don’t use for half of the year (coats in the summer, shorts in the winter). Cosmo has a great guide to organising a wardrobe which you can see here.
You could find a new space for them, maybe in another room in the house, under the sofa, or you could put them in a storage unit which you have space for in another room in the house. Don’t hold onto your items because you’re not sure where they belong, store them where they fit.
Under the bed
Storing items under your bed is a smart and easy way to add a storage area to your sleep space. If you currently don’t have any storage, there’s a number of options for you to consider, this includes buying a new storage bed, a DIY under the bed storage solution, or raising your current bed and using storage containers. There’s lots of inspiration for under bed storage on Pinterest that you should check out.
Organise, organise, organise!
Great folding and drawer dividers really are a great way to create more space, taking time to properly store your clothes away, whether it’s your wardrobe, dresser or drawers, you’ll be surprised at the amount of space you can create by putting your clothes and items away carefully. You could also consider using vacuum bags to pack away out of season clothing.
Unused space in your wardrobe
How well is your wardrobe organised? Maybe you’re using absolutely every inch of storage space in there, or maybe you’re not. If not, organise your wardrobe! You could try including more shelves, clothing rails, over the door hangers, there’s plenty of super storage tools out there that can easily fit into your current wardrobe space.
A sliding wardrobe
Whilst it’s not the most purse friendly option, having a sliding wardrobe ‘wall’ installed, if you’ve got a small bedroom, is a great way to make your room feel more spacious. It helps create a ‘cosy’ feel to the room and also add storage, it streamlines your storage options instead of making it feel bulky, like a big piece of furniture sticking out in the middle of your room.
Double duty furniture
Small storage cabinets instead of tables, a floating drawer instead of a shelf, even your bed side table could double up as extra storage if you need it. Small bedrooms mean less space for nightstands and other furniture, but instead of something streamlined, you could try and fit storage space into it.
Use the back of the door
There’s lots of potential in even the smallest bedrooms, if your door is untouched, you should consider back-of-the-door storage space for your extra items. What’s more, your door tends to be invisible in the majority of the time where you leave your door open.
Great tips!! The back of the door is the one place I haven’t utilised yet!
In our previous home, we had an Ottoman bed with masses of storage underneath. When we moved we got rid of it and bought a Divan bed. Oh how I miss all that hidden storage, perfect for bedding etc (especially hiding presents at Christmas).
