Preparation Tips for Christmas with a Toddler

December 5, 2024 in Parenting - Micaela

Christmas with a toddler is a season full of wonder, excitement, and unforgettable memories. It’s an opportunity to share the magic of the holidays through little traditions, fun activities, and special moments that introduce them to the joy of Christmas.

This year, my husband Steve and I are particularly excited as we have some festive plans lined up for our toddler daughter. We’ll be visiting Eagle Heights Wildlife Foundation for a festive afternoon tea, taking a trip on the Santa Special from Romney, Hythe, and Dymchurch Railway, and we have a Christmas Messy Play session planned – all activities we hope she’ll enjoy as much as we will. Here are some tips and ideas for creating a magical Christmas with a toddler, filled with excitement and joy.

1. Keep Christmas Simple and Child-Friendly

With so much excitement around Christmas, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed with planning and decorating. Simplifying things can make the experience more enjoyable for you and your toddler. Toddlers are easily entertained by the smaller things – twinkling lights, jingling bells, or a new Christmas storybook – so focusing on these simple pleasures helps keep the season stress-free.

In our home, we’re keeping decorations low-key and toddler-friendly this year. We’ve set up a small tree with soft, unbreakable ornaments within her reach so she can help decorate without us worrying about fragile items. When toddlers are involved in the process, it’s special for them, and their little faces light up when they can see or touch something they’ve helped create.

2. Plan Toddler-Friendly Festive Activities

Christmas activities that engage little ones in sensory play and exploration bring out the magic of the season in a way they can truly appreciate. This year, we’ve arranged some special activities, including a Christmas Messy Play session where our daughter will get the chance to play with (washable!) festive paints, sparkly sensory bins, and dough scented with cinnamon and vanilla. Messy play not only gives toddlers a chance to explore textures and colours, but it also lets them release a bit of that boundless holiday energy.

We’ll also be taking her on the Santa Special from Romney, Hythe, and Dymchurch Railway. It’s a miniature steam train experience, which will be decorated for Christmas, and there will be a chance to meet Santa along the way. Our daughter loves trains, so we can’t wait to see her excitement on the journey. Events like this are perfect for toddlers as they create an interactive experience that’s magical and memorable.

3. Embrace the Joy of Traditions

Introducing family traditions is a great way to make Christmas feel special, year after year. Traditions give children something to look forward to and help create cherished memories. Think about simple traditions that can grow with your family, such as baking cookies, reading a Christmas story each evening, or creating a Christmas Eve box with a few small treats.

One of our family’s traditions is an annual trip to Eagle Heights Wildlife Foundation, where we enjoy a festive afternoon tea. It’s a chance to sit together as a family, indulge in Christmas treats, and explore the wildlife around us. It’s always such a relaxed and unique way to celebrate, and our daughter is starting to recognise the foundation and enjoy the birds and animals there. Finding traditions that fit your family’s interests makes the holiday season feel personal and meaningful.

4. Create a Cosy and Calm Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve is a wonderful time to set the stage for Christmas Day. Keep the evening cosy and calm to prepare for the excitement to come. Toddlers might enjoy a simple bedtime ritual with a new pyjama set, a warm bath, and a Christmas story. Introducing a “Christmas Eve box” with small surprises, such as a festive book, a treat, or a small toy, can make the evening feel extra special.

We’re planning a quiet evening for our daughter with a few favourite activities to help her unwind. Christmas Eve boxes are a simple but fun way to ease into bedtime with something special, and it’s become one of our favourite traditions to prepare for the big day. The slower pace keeps the holiday magic alive while ensuring everyone gets enough rest for Christmas morning.

5. Capture the Magic with Photos and Keepsakes

Christmas is such a magical time for little ones, and creating keepsakes can preserve these memories. Whether it’s handprint ornaments, a family photo by the Christmas tree, or a personalised bauble, having mementos of these moments is lovely to look back on in years to come.

We plan to make salt dough ornaments with our daughter’s handprint this year. It’s a fun activity she can take part in, and the ornaments make precious keepsakes to hang on the tree every year. Taking photos and saving small mementos from festive outings, like the Santa train ride, will be lovely reminders of her early Christmases.

6. Keep Presents Simple and Thoughtful

While it’s tempting to shower children with gifts, toddlers often get overwhelmed by too many presents. Choose a few meaningful, age-appropriate gifts that encourage play, imagination, and learning. We’ve chosen a few small items that we know our daughter will enjoy, like a sensory toy and a Christmas-themed book, keeping her interests and developmental needs in mind.

One fun idea is the “Something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read” guideline, which keeps presents balanced and manageable. We’ve found that our daughter often enjoys unwrapping her gifts as much as playing with them, so keeping things simple makes the process fun without overwhelming her.

7. Remember to Embrace the Magic of Imperfection

With a toddler, Christmas will undoubtedly be a little messy and unpredictable – and that’s all part of the charm. Things might not go exactly as planned, and there may be a few meltdowns along the way. But by focusing on the moments of joy and staying flexible, you can enjoy a stress-free holiday season.

Steve and I are learning that Christmas with a toddler means letting go of perfection. Our daughter’s reactions are often unexpected and remind us to appreciate the little things, whether it’s her excitement at seeing twinkling lights or her delight at unwrapping a tiny gift. Embracing these moments brings warmth and magic to the season.

Conclusion

Preparing for Christmas with a toddler is an enchanting experience filled with anticipation, excitement, and new traditions. From Christmas Messy Play to festive outings like the Santa Special train ride and a cosy afternoon tea, there are endless opportunities to create magical memories. This year, Steve, our daughter, and I are embracing the small, simple joys of the season, and it’s our hope that these tips help you create a magical, meaningful Christmas with your little ones.

Ultimately, Christmas with a toddler is about sharing love, laughter, and a sense of wonder, leaving behind cherished memories that will bring joy to each holiday season.
