How to avoid 5 Common Car Tyre Problems

You might remember that I recently wrote about how to give your car a long and healthy life and one main part of this is the car’s tyres.

It is easy to take your tyres for granted but without proper attention and care serious problems can arise which could damage your car and potentially cause accidents.

Today I am going to tell you about the 5 most common tyre issues and how you can avoid them.

Tread

The tread of a tyre naturally wears down over time and if you leave this unchecked you could find yourself driving on tyres without adequate grip that could ultimately lead to slipping in wet road conditions which could cause an accident. The tread on each tyre must meet at least the legal EU minimum limit of 1.6mm. Make sure you check the tread on your tyres regularly and get any that looks like they are on the slow side replaced.

Wrong Tyres

“It’s the wrong tyres Gromit!” Well, perhaps I am paraphrasing there but making sure you have the correct type of tyres on your car for certain conditions is important. Not all tyres are the same; manufacturers design each tyre model to provide different performance benefits under specific conditions such as winters tyres to combat snow and summer tyres on dry surfaces. These days it is easy to find car tyres online,  book  today from DAT TYRES here.

Incorrectly Inflated

You can reduce the life of your tyres by up to 25% if they are incorrectly inflated. Most problems are due to under-inflation which can result in sluggish and unresponsive driving. It is important to check that the pressure of your tyres are within the manufacturer’s guidelines to avoid increased running costs and risk of permanent tyre damage. You can usually find the correct tyre pressure range in your vehicle handbook.

Overloading

It is easy to forget when you’re packing your car up for a holiday or perhaps to move house that all that extra weight is putting more pressure on your car’s tyres. You’re probably more interested in squeezing one more box in than keeping an eye out for overloading but it is important that you don’t put too much weight on your tyres. Overloaded tyres can build up excessive heat that could end up with an unexpected tyre bursting. It is important to read the load index of your tyres, which is found on the tyre sidewall and stick to these numbers.

Impact Damage

We’ve all gotten a bit too close to a curb or a bollard and bumped our tyres on the concrete. Unfortunately sometimes impact like these can cause tyres to become warped and damaged which ultimately makes them unsafe. Usually, you will be able to see a bulge on the sidewall indicating that there has been internal damage and if we ignore this there is a risk of the tyre failing in the future, usually when the tread or sidewall gives up the ghost. Make sure you check your tyres if you are involved in a bump especially if the impact is at some speed and replace any tyres which are showing signs of damage.
