How Your House is Eating Your Money

October 12, 2023 in Home & Garden - Micaela

Now, more than ever, our homes are our castles… metaphorically speaking of course. They protect us from the slings and arrows of the world’s ill fortunes. They’re a place where we can relax and close the door to all of our worries.

Well, most of them anyway. While we may be able to leave the stress of work and the global political and economic uncertainties of 2020 on the doorstep, we can’t always leave our money worries at home. Especially when, in many cases, the home is the cause of much of our money trouble.

As much as you adore those four walls and everything within them, your home is hungry. And it’s eating up more of your money than you realise. Here are four ways in which your home could be costing you an unnecessary fortune…

Your water (and your money) is going down the drain

Many of us tend not to think about how much water we’re using. But failing to account for our use of this precious resource can not only be damaging to the environment, it can also cause your bills to skyrocket.

Take steps to reduce your water use by;

  • Only rinsing your toothbrush when you need to and not leaving the tap running
  • Setting your toilet to low flush where applicable
  • Taking fewer baths
  • Installing a low flow shower head
  • Reducing the time you spend in the shower to 4 minutes
  • Steaming rather than boiling your veggies

You’re paying over the odds for your home insurance

You love your home and (quite understandably) want to keep it protected. Especially in these increasingly uncertain times. But while insurance may be essential, over-paying for it certainly isn’t. Which is why you should use an insurance broker like one sure insurance to get the best deals.

Price comparison sites aren’t always the way to go. Letting your insurance policy roll over year on year could mean that you’re losing a fortune when you could be getting the same (or better) cover much cheaper.

You’re wasting a fortune on keeping it clean

Your home is an investment, and you dutifully keep it like one. You’re very particular about keeping your home clean, tidy and well maintained. However, you can keep a clean and tidy home without throwing away a small fortune on cleaning products. There’s very little around the home that can’t be cleaned with simple household items.

Even the stubbornest stains can be removed with baking soda and spirit vinegar. The streakiest windows can regain their glimmer with equal parts water and white vinegar with a little lemon juice. You can even use olive oil to polish your wooden furniture.

The truth is that all those cleaning products under your sink are at best redundant and at worst bad for the environment

The energy vampires are sucking up your disposable income

Finally, it’s important to identify the energy vampires in your home. The devices that keep sapping your energy, even though they’re not doing much of anything. TVs, games consoles, DVD & Blu Ray Players. They can all waste energy while on standby. Use a smart meter to get a clearer idea of your energy usage and switch off energy vampires at the wall.
