I rarely wear a lot of jewellery, the pieces that I do wear mean a lot to me and are usually on the minimal side of style so when I discovered Sederhana Jewellery I was inspired by the simplicity of design and the notion that by choosing jewellery from Sederhana means investing in the local people, creating jobs and investing into the Economy of the Island of Bali where the pieces are made.
I was lucky enough to be able to put some questions to Seberhana’s founder, Hannah Power and I share her responses below.
What inspired you to first start Sederhana Jewellery?
My desire for simple, high quality jewellery with meaning and an ethical background. I wanted to create a brand which enhances who you are, rather then making you feel you need to be or have more, that’s why we use the hashtag #youareenough Find out more in this video.
What is the story behind your brand name?
Sederhana means simple in Indonesian! I was sat with a friend and was trying to think of names, popped it into google translate and thought – perfect! Although, it is is pronounced Said-a-han-a but many say ’See-der-haan-a’ so it annoys me at times haha. Friends of mine at home joke that is ’simple Hannah’ (because of my name) which drives me MAD!
What makes Sederhana Jewellery special?
I’d say the fact it is handmade in Bali, the silver and gold is from Indonesia and the story behind 2 of the necklaces: the lucky penny and the karma necklace.
Who are your jewellery design idols/ inspiration?
To be honest, I find it hard to find designs which are simple enough and high quality enough for me! I love Astrid & Miyu for their bold but not overly fussy designs, Tiffany for their simple rings and also I’m a big fan of the Z range for Accessorize! A big mix I think
Do you have a personal favourite from the Sederhana Jewellery range?
Hmm, a tough one, the lucky penny makes me feel happy and lifts me up when I’m a bit nervous but the karma necklace has such a huge amount of meaning and backstory for me. It is the piece which inspired the entire creation of the brand and actually was a big part of my move to Bali, so I’d have to go Karma!
How do you go about designing/choosing a new piece?
I usually think of something I want, go to find it and can’t find it – basically the other reason I started Sederhana. I usually make a (very basic) drawing and show friends first to see what they think – my housemate Harri is a big help!
What are your top picks from the Sederhana Jewellery range for Christmas?
I think the little heart studs because they go with absolutely everything and suit everyone and the penny necklace – it’s on trend and who doesn’t need a bit of luck!
What trends do you predict will be big in jewellery for 2019?
I think more layering and pairing big bold jewellery with simple jewellery – it’s becoming a big part of style
What’s next for Sederhana Jewellery?
I’m really excited that we’ll hopefully be partnering soon with a charity in the UK to support survivors of Rape and Sexual Abuse. Proceeds from the Karma necklace will be going towards the charity to help increase access to therapy and support under the hashtag #youarenotalone. I’d like to support the movement of ‘breaking the silence’ on rape, Sederhana is early days so it’s just a small contribution, but at least it’s something and it gets us started!
