For nearly 3 years now I have been working from home as a digital marketing consultant and I still haven’t achieved my perfect home office set up which is pretty pathetic! I see other people sharing photographs of their beautiful and functional workspaces and it makes me very jealous.
My main problem has been that my workspace hasn’t been in the same place for the last 3 years, in fact, I have had setups in 3 different rooms in my house as our need for space has evolved and changed. Which has meant my office space has felt at best, temporary.
Now I am considering moving my home office again and it has got me thinking about what I really need and want from an ideal home office in terms of function and style and these are my considerations:
The perfect desk & chair
As someone who makes a living on a computer having the correct desk is really important to me. There are several things to think about including size, style and comfort. I would really love a large workspace area which can house my computer, printer etc as well as my craft supplies and gadgets as I am an avid crafter
I have my eye on an L shaped desk from Amazon which can fit into a corner which will be space saving. I think I would prefer a desk without any drawers as I have a tendency to fill draws with all sorts of clutter!
As my husband is an Osteopath I have plenty of information to help me pick out the best chair to support me whilst I am sitting working away for hours at a time at my desk. No-one wants to be in pain all evening from sitting in an improper chair. I would like one which has as much flexibility as possible so I can find the best position for me to sit in.
Lighting
The room my office is set up in currently is a small spare bedroom and although it isn’t a bad space I find that the sunlight can either be way too strong or too dark. I prefer natural light where possible, especially for taking photographs, but there comes a time when I have to resort to electric lights.
As well as a ceiling light I will definitely like to have a floor light in my crafting space and a desk lamp by my computer. I have my eye on a wooden table lamp from Cox & Cox as they appeal to my minimal Scandi style.
Decoration
As I have mentioned I really love a simple Scandi style colour palette and decoration. My ideal home office space would have a few personal touches such as motivational quotes on the wall and photos of friends and family on the desk to make me smile when I am having a stressful day.
I find having a whiteboard or pinboard on the wall very helpful as I can keep track of important information or documents so I will definitely want to include one in my ideal set up. I will need other practical touches like storage to keep everything tidy and tucked away. I recently read Marie Kondo’s book and I have been inspired to declutter and neaten up the house!
What does your ideal home office include?
I think I’d like an office something like yours! Definitely lots of storage….but still easy to find what I need in a hurry. I too blog in the evenings so lighting is a big problem for me which I have not yet solved. đ
