I love being crafty and my main craft at the moment is crochet. I get immense satisfaction watching a ball of yarn turn into a blanket, hat or scarf. Like most crocheters, I have a decent sized wool stash and I add to it on a regular basis without giving much thought to where it comes from or if there might be a more environmentally friendly way to be creative with yarn.
I recently came across Renee & Burt on Kickstarter, a DIY fashion brand creating fun, colourful sustainable yarns and modern crochet and knitting kits and patterns. Do you know that 350,000 tonnes of clothing are sent to the landfill every year in the UK? Isn’t that crazy? Renee & Burt wanted to find a way to reuse these clothes and turn them into lovely yarns so old garments can be reborn as new unique pieces.
The Renee & Burt yarns are made out of 70% sustainably sourced wool, and 30% organic cotton and are hand spun and hand dyed by talented artisans in Peru. This means that each yarn has been lovingly handcrafted to be soft and squishy and designed to be easy to crochet and knit with. They come in balls of 100g, in recyclable packaging, in various vibrant colours including solid colours, colour mixes some including a bit of sparkle!
The Renee & Burt want to pioneer the way in slow fashion to make a more sustainable world. Their yarns, patterns and kits are made out of the passion for a greener world and are centred around modern, timeless, sustainable pieces that you will love. I love the idea of creating something beautiful out of something that was considered as ‘waste’ and turning something heading for landfill into a much-loved hand crochet piece.
You can join the movement by visiting their Kickstarter page and backing this worthwhile project, just like I have. I can’t wait for my recycled yarns to arrive so I can get started on making something new from something old.
