Since the start of the year, spurred on by my own weight loss journey, I have been learning more and more about nutrition and specialist diets. In fact, I have just successfully completed a Diploma in Nutrition and Weight loss, so when I heard that there was a company out there making a chocolate with an improved nutritional profile I wanted to learn more.
Rebel Chocolate has an ethos; to reject the norm through innovative thinking – maximise the good and minimise the bad. Their range of chocolate bars is high in protein, lactose-free and overall healthier than your average bar. How do they do it, I hear you ask? Well, here’s how.
Normal chocolate is packed full of sugar which Rebel Chocolate have worked hard to reduce in their bars. They have reformulated milk chocolate by using some of the best quality cocoa in the world combined with a highly pure whey protein to create a chocolate bar which is low in unhealthy sugar but high in protein and cocoa goodness. Their milk chocolate contains 57% cocoa, has less than half the sugar content of “standard” milk chocolate and contains a whopping 25% protein.
Did you know that Rebel Chocolate’s milk chocolate bar is the only milk chocolate made in the UK which is lactose-free? This makes their bars perfect for anyone who has a lactose allergy but still wants to be able to enjoy a milk chocolate treat. You can learn more about their lactose-free chocolate on their website here.
So, let’s get to the tasting, shall we? I was sent one of their 90g Colombian Milk Chocolate bars to test out. This is their most popular bar boasting big, bold and rich cocoa flavours which come from the single source “Fino de Aroma” cocoa from the Huila region of Colombia, which only the best 8% of the world’s cocoa falls under.
The Colombian Milk Chocolate is made of a blend this sought after “Fino de Aroma” cocoa combined with cocoa butter, lactose-free whey protein, lactose-free whole milk powder and sugar. The ingredients are combined and ground in a stone grinder through a process called conching which takes at least 72 hours to ensure a smooth, flavourful chocolate.
If you didn’t know any better you would think this chocolate was just the same as ordinary chocolate just by looking at it. It has that enticing chocolate colour and a lovely matt sheen to it. It is easy to snap into bite-size pieces and has the same texture to the touch as a regular bar.
Now, this chocolate is not for the faint of heart; it certainly has the big, bold and rich cocoa flavours that it boasts. In fact, with less sugar and powerful cocoa my taste testers described it as being more like a dark chocolate than a milk chocolate. On first taste, it has a different texture compared to a regular bar which I guess comes from the added protein, it wasn’t unpleasant and only took a couple of squares to get used to.
Overall, the Colombian Milk Chocolate from Rebel Chocolate offers a powerful cocoa boost with the added benefits of being lower in sugar and higher in protein than regular chocolate bars out there on the market. If you compare the Rebel Chocolate’s 25g protein and 27g sugar per 100g to Dairy Milk’s 7.3g protein and 56g sugar per 100g there’s really no question which one is the healthier option.
It is perfect for anyone who is unable to consume lactose due to allergies which makes it a real game changer. In my opinion, it’s well worth changing from regular milk chocolate when you consider the overall health benefits of the Rebel Chocolate bar. I award the Colombian Milk Chocolate from Rebel Chocolate 4 out of 5 stars.
