Since I decided to work on losing weight I haven’t allowed myself many sweet treats, however, when I was with my sister on a recent trip to Spitalfields Market in East London I decided to give myself a break when I came across Crosstown Doughnuts and discovered their vegan range!
Crosstown launched their speciality handmade sourdough doughnuts from a market stall on Leather Lane in 2014 and have come on leaps and bounds. Their delicious doughnuts are made from the best quality jam, compote, glaze, filling or topping.
They pride themselves on preparing their range of doughnuts by hand, fresh 365 days a year in their bakery in London. Amazingly they handmake all of their jams, custards, fillings, glazes and toppings and the sourdough is rolled by hand.
I was very excited when I spotted that Crosstown have a range of vegan-friendly doughnuts and I picked out their lemon-thyme doughnut made with their famous pink beetroot dough which is hand-dipped in a tangy lemon-thyme glaze and topped with a mix of vanilla crumble and fresh lemon-thyme, finished off with Crosstown’s signature icing cross.
My sister picked out the vegetarian-friendly rhubarb and raspberry doughnut which is made with black cocoa chocolate cake dough, filled with a homemade rhubarb and raspberry jam, topped rhubarb and raspberry icing and finished with a chocolate crumble, not forgetting the signature icing cross.
This was my first ever vegan doughnut (I haven’t allowed myself anything with this much sugar for a long time!), and I was so pleased that it had a really satisfyingly soft dough with a sweet, citrus tang coming from the glaze. I love the crumble on top as it gives another level to the eating experience.
So, if you ever find yourself running low on energy after a day of shopping in Spitalfields then grab yourself one of these bad boys for an instant pick-me-up, you won’t be disappointed!
