Whether you want to upgrade your lifestyle, add value to your home, or simply feel like you need a major style change, a renovation can just the right thing to refresh the home and your spirits. However, renovations are big projects, and they can come with a lot of stress if you’re not careful. Here are a few tips you can take to make sure they go a lot more smoothly.
List your wants and needs
You might have a dream idea of what your renovation is going to look like. However, reality, budget, and time constraints might force you to slim those down a little. At some point, you might have to sacrifice one part of that dream for another. To that end, make sure that you have your wants and needs prioritised so that, when it does come time to give something up, you know what is actually the most important part of the project for you.
Budget, budget, budget
If you want to make sure that you make your renovations at an affordable cost, then you should first have an idea of what “affordable” means to you. Think about your wants and then talk to various teams, getting estimates from each of them. Make sure that you budget for not just the labour, but any materials and new appliances you’re going to use as well. It’s often considered wise to budget a little extra for any unexpected changes to the project, as well.
Get your building team involved in the design
Miscommunication between designers and builders can lead to a lot of hassle. If you’re working with a team of renovators, get them involved early. Choose those that are specifically kitchen project management & installation specialists, rather than just your average builder. They’re going to have a much better idea of how to plan the project to make it as efficient and cost-effective as possible.
Use self-storage
You might have some assets, some decor pieces that you want to keep, but no place to keep them. If you have a garage, attic, or the like, then that can work fine. Otherwise, you should consider doing your research on nearby self-storage facilities that can help you keep your assets safe. If they’re left lying around, they are very viable to experience damage due to the work going on around them.
Get the kids and pets out of the way
Don’t work with children and animals. It’s not just a mantra that applies to TV. They can be a major distraction at best and an actual liability and threat to the safety of the worksite and those in it. To that end, make sure you have someone to babysit when the renovations are going on and hire a doggy daycare to make sure that any distractions are out of the way.
There’s no guarantee your renovations won’t hit any snags or snafus. With the tips above, however, you can make sure that they’re at least a lot easier to deal with.
