Over the past year, everyone has become used to a significant amount of change as the world battles COVID-19. The lifestyle changes that everyone is experiencing at the moment are entirely unprecedented, and it seems crazy to think that 18 months ago, no one had any idea what was to come. The arrival of the pandemic has introduced the world to many new phrases and lots of terminology.
Before 2020, many people had probably never needed to utter the words ‘lockdown,’ or ‘self-isolating,’ much less had any idea what an ‘R-number’ is. But, just as these words have become part of everyday vocabulary, the concept of wearing a facemask in public and using hand sanitiser at every opportunity has also become part of the ‘new norm.’
While this last year has been a time of considerable change, the past decade has seen the arrival of many new trends that no one could have anticipated. Here are some of the most notable trends to have emerged over the past ten years:
Vaping
E-cigarettes may have been invented in 2003, but vaping began to really increase in popularity from 2010 onwards. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in 2019, almost 3 million adults in Great Britain used e-cigarettes. According to research, the e-cigarette market is expected to continue to grow over the next five years. So, while just ten years ago it was unusual to see people vaping, shopping for Vape Supplies and seeing people with e-cigarettes is a trend that looks set to continue.
CBD
One trend that seems to have been everywhere over the past couple of years is CBD oil. CBD, aka cannabidiol, has gained huge popularity and is now legal in the UK so long as it does not contain THC. It is the THC in cannabis that causes people to get high.
From skincare products to pet care, you have probably noticed CBD products popping up everywhere from the chemist to the supermarket in recent years.
E-Scooters
Move over hoverboards because e-scooters are the latest must-have mode of transport. Although they enjoyed vast popularity during 2020, with many people choosing to buy e-scooters, they remain controversial. Currently, it is illegal to ride e-scooters anywhere other than private land. However, as this law is set to be reviewed this year, the e-scooter trend may be just beginning.
Internet of Things (IoT)
It’s hard to imagine that just over a decade ago 4G was introduced, and the first Samsung Galaxy S smartphone was released. Fast forward to today, and online capabilities have grown beyond anything previously imagined. The growing rise of the internet of things (IoT) has given everyday household objects a newfound technological edge. Many tech fans have embraced the smart home concept in recent years and adopted IoT throughout their lives. Whether it is turning on the heating using their smartphone or monitoring their home while on holiday via a doorbell cam and app, the IoT is a trend that has had a significant impact.
